Douglas Merritt was a Philipstown native who assisted and trained as a surveyor under Allan Smith, P.E., L.S. He resided in the North Highlands section of the town, and was employed by IBM Corporation. He practiced part-time from 1951 to 1970. His practice was concentrated in western Putnam County, where he conducted many surveys in Cold Spring, Nelsonville, and Philipstown, with occasional surveys in southern Dutchess County.
